Budda is a slang often used derogatorily to describe or point to a senior citizen. We at SEN have consciously chosen this term for the simple reason that this is what the “budda’s” of tomorrow actually perceive those older than themselves. Unless this perception is changed, couching terms politely, leads us into the same quagmire of inaction that Indians are often accused of.

At SEN-SBI we see Buddas as not merely has-beens but the repository of what is best of the Indian culture. When 10% of the so called PIOs (Persons of Indian Origin) have grown outside the country with their knowledge of their culture limited by their reading and often seen through the lens of their immediate neighbors, colleagues and friends, it is these seniors, their grandparents who have the wisdom that shaped them. This is very much a process in action for the resident Indians.

It is not in the great things that a human is shaped, but the small little things that define who we are and how others perceive us. This knowledge is what is usually learnt at home from these Buddas and that make us what we are. It is the primary school of which we are all students.

Today we live in an age where bachas and Buddas have a lot to exchange. Cultural values to the young and new tools to the aged. This gives a unique opportunity for this generation to be special.  Our Buddas have the same problems that all humans have been having over the generations with a few more to complicate life,

  1. Better medical facilities keep us alive longer through declining faculties.
  2. Complicated documentation that baffle the best of experts.
  3. Technology that keeps changing.
  4. Even English is now no longer understandable with words like ola, facebook, google, flipkart, etc. in common use.

SEN-SBI (Smart Budda Initiative) is looking at empowering our respected senior citizens in the areas of

  • Documentation – Income and Taxation, statutory, etc.
  • Health – insurance, medical care, medicines.
  • Technology – acquisition, use and upgrades.
  • Safety – tools, infrastructure and personnel.

Being a proud society, our seniors would not hesitate to pay for services if the need is there and the price is right. (We could learn quite a bit from our thrifty seniors 🙂 ). Without burdening any individual Budda, with the SEN-SBI initiative, NGOs and needy students can still earn a good income without waiting for grants.
